Zechariah Plavin

Zechariah Plavin, a pianist born in Vilna (Lithuania), studied with Deborah Yellin and Marietta Azizbekova, at the National M. K. Čiurlionis School of Art, and later at the local conservatory.

After making aliyah, he studied at the Academy of Music at Tel Aviv University under Prof. Drobianko, and continued his studies in London under Luis Kantner. He has a PhD in Musicology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Since 1980, he has performed as a soloist with orchestras in Israel and abroad, including with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. He has made recordings from the works of Scriabin and Schumann for the Sound-Star-Ton (Germany) and the works of Mendelssohn and Schumann for Meridian Records (England). He has also made recordings from the works of Ben-Zion Orgad for the Broadcasting Authority. He has performed extensively in recitals and chamber ensembles throughout the country, as well as in Europe and the United States, as part of various festivals.

Zechariah Plavin was the musical director of several international seminars in Tel Aviv working with many composers, including Ben-Zion Orgad, Zvi Avni, Mark Kopytman, Ami Maayani, Noam Sheriff, Ari Ben-Shabetai, Haim Fremont, Landowski, Michael Wolfe, Sir Harrison Birtwistle and Einojuhanni Rautavaara.

Plavin has taught many master classes in San Diego, at the Würzburg University of Music (Germany), the Academy in Lithuania, in Prague, and more. He has written two plays: one on the composer Ernest Bloch and the other on 20th century composers. He is a member of the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance.
