Sarah Ozacky-Lazar

Sarah Ozacky-Lazar was born on 16th March 1947. She is an historian specializing in the Middle East, a research fellow of the Van Leer Institute in Jerusalem, and also a social activist.

Ozacky-Lazar was born in and grew up in Tel Aviv. She is the daughter Chaya Shapira and Chaim Lazar-Litai, a partisan, a member of Beitar and an historian. She was named after her maternal grandmother and her father’s sister who had died during the Holocaust. Ozacky-Lazar earned her BA in Middle-Eastern History, and in Arabic and Arab Literature from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, as well as an MA and PhD in Middle-Eastern History from the University of Haifa. The subject of her work was “Integration of Reciprocal Relations between Jews and Arabs in Israel: the first decade 1948 – 1958”, which she wrote under the guidance of Gabi Warburg and Kais Perot. Since then, she has engaged in teaching, research and social activism. Her research deals with the Arab-Palestinian minority in Israel and examining its attitude towards the Jewish majority. In 2002 and 2007, she taught Middle-Eastern History at the University of Haifa, the Wilberforce University in Ohio (1992), and in the State University of San Diego (2003).

She served as co-director of the Jewish-Arab Center for Peace at Givat Haviva for many years (under her leadership, the center won the UNESCO Peace Education Award) and she served as director of the Institute for Peace Research at the center. Three times she was a research fellow for the Jewish Agency in Jewish communities throughout the United States. She was also a research fellow of the Center for Strategic and Political Thinking at the Hebrew University where she carried out research on women in the Middle East.  

Ozacky-Lazar wrote book reviews for the Ha’aretz newspaper, and lists for The Green Page, as well as being a literary critic of books on the Holocaust for the Hebrew weekly magazine ‘HaUma’.

Ozacky-Lazar served as a member of the board of the New Israel Fund and later on became a member of the Fund’s public council. She is a member of the board of the Palestinian-Israeli Peace Organizations Forum, the Alliance for New Mankind, and the Megiddo Community College.

She is married to Yuri, has two children and lives on Kibbutz Ramot Menashe.
