Mordechai Flungian (1816-1883) was a scholar, linguist, writer and one of Vilna's leading intellectuals. He was born in Flungian in Lithuania. His father, Shlomo Yaffe, was a descendant of Rabbi Mordechai Yaffe author of Levush Malchut ("Robes of Royalty"). When he was young he learned with well-known rabbis and, after a long period of study in Eyshishuk, settled in Vilna.
He was appointed head teacher of the Mishna and Poskim in the Rabbinical College of Vilna alongside Shai Finn, Adam Hacohen Levenson and Shlomo Zelkind. He was renowned for his clear Hebrew writing; in addition, he knew eight other languages. His books became famous and he gained a reputation in Vilna and all of Lithuania. It was said that Rabbi Yitzhak Spector testified that he had never seen a Torah scholar like him.He was a one of the intellectual elite of Vilna and his stamp of approval appears on many books, some of which dealt with Jewish thought and philosophy.He died in 1883 and was eulogized at his funeral by well-known members of the community.
