Yehiel (Elia) Sheinbaum

Yehiel (Elia) Sheinbaum was born in Odessa in 1914. After his mother's death, when he was 3, he moved to Kovel in Volhinya. He went to the Tarbut high school, was a member of the Zionist youth movement Dror and the Kolosova hachshara (a farm for teenagers preparing to make aliyah to Israel). He studied electrical engineering and was an officer in the Polish army.  He organized the branches of Dror in Poland and   prepared for aliyah at the Borochov kibbutz. After he was married, he deferred his aliyah, remaining in Vilna as an emissary of Dror. Towards the end of 1939 he began transferring members of the youth movement from Nazi-occupied Poland, via Volhinya, to Vilna; his unit was called "Yehiels's Combat Unit".

Yehiel's Combat Unit

Besides the F.P.O. (The United Partisan Organization), in the Vilna Ghetto there was also another group of fighters: "Yehiel's Combat Unit". Its members played a leading role in the planning of the resistance movement. The group set itself an objective to get as many people as possible out of the ghetto to join the partisans in the forest. The organization (headed by Yehiel Sheinbaum) managed to get a few hundred partisans to the forest and they became the nucleus of the Jewish partisan groups.

Yehiel was killed in a battle against the Nazis in the Vilna Ghetto. He was buried in the old cemetery in the city. His wife, Pessia, fought alongside him, survived and fled to the forests; she later made aliyah and raised a family in Israel.
