Nahum Lipovsky (1874-1928) was born in Polish Lithuania. He was given a traditional Jewish education. He started his acting career in 1892 with the Avrum Yitzhak Kaminski troupe and continued directing and acting in theaters across Russia and Germany.

In 1908 he founded and managed the "Jewish Folk Theater" - the Yiddish theater in Vilna, with which he toured various cities. In 1920, the theater reached Kovno and the surrounding cities.  In 1921, the actors joined forces with Sokolov's theater and created a new troupe called "The First United Jewish Group". The group put on The Dybbuk by Ansky, Wer Git Mar Nadan (The Bigger the Dowry) by Israel Ma-Yafit, Shver Zu Zein a Yid (It's hard to be a Jew) by Shalom Aleichem and other plays.

Lipovsky was renowned for his ability to portray both well-known gentiles and Jews, such as Henry Ibsen, Max Nordau, Herzl, Shalom Aleichem, Lev Tolstoy and Moses Montefiore.
