Last week we gathered in Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, to mark 81 years of the liquidation of the Vilna ghetto and the Jews of Lithuania. Dozens of members of the Association of Jews from Vilnius and Vicinity, survivors and next generations, officers and soldiers of the Naval Vessel Engineering Unit and the ambassador of Lithuania in Israel, Mr. Odrius Brozaga and the staff of the embassy in Israel.
The eternal light was lit by Miriam Goldin, a survivor of the Vilna Ghetto and Major Jonathan David Por, a Navy representative. The memorial service for the victims of the community was held in the Hall of Remembrance, carried by Rabbi Shaul Farber, the ambassador and chairman of the Association laid wreaths of mourning. Mr. Brozaga also placed a stone on the Ponar Tomb.
In the beautiful synagogue, the ambassador spoke about the wake-up call to the world, after the monstrous attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023 which highlights the danger Jews face, even 80 years after the Holocaust.
The chairman of the Association noted that the events of October 7th demonstrated again the destructive and dangerous power of hatred and violence, which despite being a sovereign country, still threaten Israel's existence. Remembering the Holocaust took on a deeper and even more creepy meaning.
Naama Galil lectured on three prominent figures in the community's life between the two world wars - Iron Lady Deborah Rom, Rabbi Haim Oyzar Grodzenski, and artist Moshé Raviv-Vorobeichic, whose son Yossi Raviv and his granddaughter were among the participants of the gathering.
The event, was moderated by Miri Krausher, and the singer Dorit Klein moved the audience with her songs.
