Amos Eran on Yitzhak Rabin – 30 Years Since His Assassination 2025

November 2025, at Beit Vilna – the Center for the Commemoration and Heritage of Lithuanian Jewry – we held an evening in memory of the late Yitzhak Rabin, Prime Minister of Israel, who was assassinated by gunfire thirty years ago in Tel Aviv.

Amos Eran, whose roots run deep in Vilna and who served as Rabin’s political advisor during his tenures as Israel’s ambassador to Washington, as Prime Minister, and as Minister of Defense, opened the evening by sharing stories about his own family from Vilna, particularly about his mother, Emma Tauber, who was an opera singer.

Amos went on to describe the relationships he forged with the Lithuanian governments, which appointed him Honorary Consul of Lithuania in Israel, and which led to the establishment of the March of the Living in Lithuania on September 23, 1943—the day marking the liquidation of the Vilna Ghetto—a tradition that continues annually to this day.

Amos Eran captivated the audience with fascinating stories from his years alongside Rabin—recounting in vivid detail the dilemmas surrounding secret meetings, confidential conversations, understandings, decisions, and agreements, complete with historical names and dates. The audience sat spellbound, listening attentively to every word.
