Dr. Josef Epsztajn, a physician, public activist, Zionist activist and educator in Vilnius (Vilna). Epstein, who was born in Ukraine in 1874, established a school in Vilnius (Vilna), which was recognized as a Hebrew gymnasium in 1918. He died of typhus in 1916, and the school, which belonged to the "Tarbut" network, was named after him. Alongside the gymnasium was also an elementary school, which was also named after Epstein.
